Sperm Analysis (Spermiogram)
In about half of couples with infertility complaints, the problem is that the sperm are abnormal.
The most important cause of male infertility is the deterioration of the sperm’s ability to fertilize the egg cell. For this reason, the first test we do for couples who want a child and apply to a doctor is sperm analysis or ‘spermiogram’.
While giving a sperm analysis, you should not have ejaculated for 2 or 3 days. At the end of this period, you can give your sample. In many centers, the patient has to give the special rough sample given to him while masturbating in the men’s restroom or in a room in the laboratory. This is a situation that stresses men out and makes sampling difficult.
We give the sample container to our patient in our clinic, and we want our patient to give the sperm sample and bring the sample container to our clinic in an environment where he will be more comfortable in his own home.
Remember, you should not use factors such as saliva, water, soap as a lubricant that may disrupt the sperm analysis while giving samples.
In order for the egg cell to fertilize, the sperm and the prostate secretion in the semen must have certain properties. In the laboratory, we examine the volume of semen, the number of sperm, whether the sperm are normally shaped, their motility, and the properties of prostate secretion.
Let’s list the normal sperm values:
- The ejaculated semen should be more than 1.5 milliliters.
- There should be more than 15 million sperm cells in each milliliter of semen.
- Head, neck and tail parts of at least half of the sperm should have a normal appearance.
- At least 40% of the sperm must be forward motile to fertilize the egg cell.
If at the end of this examination, the number, shape and motility of the sperms are above the criteria mentioned above, the sperm analysis is considered normal.
If there are results below these criteria, then we plan vaccination or IVF treatment with various drug treatments according to the abnormality.
